How to Choose the Right Academy for Your Teenager

I have sat with hundreds of families weighing up summer programmes, and I have noticed that the ones who choose well almost always ask the same small set of honest questions — and ignore the glossy brochures. Here is the short, candid guide I wish every parent had before comparing options, including ours.

Start with the student, not the city

The most common mistake I see is choosing a destination because it sounds impressive. 'London' or 'a famous campus' becomes the goal, and the actual experience gets reverse-engineered to fit. Flip it. Begin with a different question entirely: what does *this particular teenager* genuinely want to test in themselves this summer? Independence? A subject they are considering for university? A creative leap? Once you know the answer, the right programme — and only then the right city — becomes obvious.

A child sent to a prestigious city to do something they do not care about has a mediocre week in a beautiful place. A child sent to do something they love has a transformative one, almost regardless of the postcode.

Three questions worth asking any programme

When you have a shortlist, ask each provider these directly. The quality of the answer tells you almost everything.

• **Who, specifically, will teach my child?** Not 'leading academics' in the abstract — actual people, and whether they still work in the field. Vagueness here is the biggest red flag of all.
• **What does the final day look like?** A serious programme builds towards something — a project, a presentation, an exhibition. If the week just… ends, ask why.
• **What is the cohort, and what is the network I am buying into?** Who else is in the room matters as much as the syllabus. Diverse, ambitious cohorts create friendships and standards that outlast the programme.

If a provider cannot answer these clearly and specifically, that hesitation is its own answer.

On price, honestly

Residential academies at this level are not cheap, and you should know exactly what the fee includes before comparing numbers. Accommodation, all meals, materials, excursions, transfers, round-the-clock pastoral care — these add up, and a suspiciously low price usually means some of them are missing or the groups are large. Compare like with like. The cheapest option is rarely the best value, and the most expensive is not automatically the best programme.

The safeguarding non-negotiables

Whatever else you weigh, do not compromise on safety. Ask about group sizes, background checks, 24/7 supervision and how medical and dietary needs are handled. A good provider will be glad you asked. Be wary of any that treats the question as an inconvenience.
